Bea Szenfeld

The first time I saw Bea Szenfeld was on a reality show on TV where fashion people from different parts of the world competed for an assistant's job at Versace. It was quite an odd show but I don't think Bea won. She has done well for herself anyway with Björk as one of her customers. Bea herself has a very unique way of expression with her 1950s inspired attire. I think that she is cool because she goes her own way. That is something to admire.
Her clothes and collections are a mix between art and fashion. She has no lack of creativity in that body of hers. Her particular style of clothes is one part Clockwork Orange and one part Alice in Wonderland. That is an exciting combination indeed.

There is no doubt that we are going to see more of Bea in the future and I think that we are going to see great things.

Vivien Leigh

Did You Know?

For much of her life, Vivien Leigh suffered from mental illness. After a breakdown in the 1950s she was sent to Netherne Hospital in Surrey for a week and underwent the controversial ECT treatment.

Birth name:

Vivian Mary Hartley

Height:

5' 3½" (1.61 m)

Spouse:

Laurence Olivier (31 August 1940 - 2 December 1960) (divorced)

    Herbert Leigh Holman (20 December 1932 - February 1940) (divorced) 1 child

Remembered For?

Scarlett O'Hara, Blanche Dubois, two Oscars, life as Lady Olivier, life after Lady Olivier, bouts of hysteria and depression, the affair with Peter Finch, and her perculiar 'poetic' nervousness.

That Scarlett Woman!
Vivien Leigh's rise to stardom can be traced back to December 10,1938, when Atlanta - simulated by a group of old sets - was going up in flames a second time. The long delayed filming of Gone With The Wind (1939) was finally underway, even though the Scarlett O'Hara role remained to be cast - an extraordinary risk for director David O.Selznick to run. Between setting up the takes, Myron Selznick, one of Hollywood's foremost agents approached his brother, beckoning from the shadows of the old Pathe back-lot a slender young woman with beautiful eyes. Myron uttered:

'Dave, I want you to meet Scarlett O'Hara.'

That, at least, is the story of how Vivien Leigh came to be cast in the role coveted or claimed at one time or another by every rising, established or waning female star in Hollywood. Perhaps the only exceptions were Barbara Stanwyck (who was aware her screen persona made her unsuitable for the part) and Hedy Lamarr (whose Viennese accent cancelled her out).

The carefully orchestrated search ended in a coup de theatre with the relevation that an English actress, with only a few films to her credit, was to play the Southern heroine of the the novel that, since 1936, had outsold the bible in the USA. The fact that Vivien Leigh was not American failed to outrage the many Scarlett O'Hara fans in the Deep South; the unforgivable miscasting would have been to let a Yankee play the role!

After diction lessons, Vivien Leigh successfully added the right touch of molasses to her clipped English delivery. She was also coached (first officially and later privately) by George Cukor, Selznick's original choice to direct Gone With The Wind. She battled constantly with Victor Fleming (the director who replaced George Cukor after three weeks), failed to make friends with her co-star Clark Gable, threw tantrums on the set and off, and won an Oscar.

The Truth about Scarlett?

Her achievement still stands, even if there remains doubt as to how she came to play the role. Another version of the story is that Victor Saville, the British director who directed Leigh in Storm in a Teacup (1937) rang her London flat one day and said:

'Vivien, I've just read a great story for the movies about the bitchiest of all bitches, and you're just the person to play the part.'

Resolved to try for the part of Scarlett, Leigh followed Laurence Olivier - then her paramour, later her husband - to California, where he was to play Heathcliff in Samuel Goldwyn's production of Wuthering Heights (1939).

It seems she was probably seen by - and made a strong impression on - David O. Selznick and Cukor, and was kept under wraps while the continuing search for Scarlett gathered a million dollars worth of publicity. She was then made to appear, like a rabbit out of Myron Selznick's hat, to snatch the part.

The English Rose of Hollywood

At 26 she became a priceless commodity in the industry. David O. Selznick, the sole proprietor of her contract, doled her talents out parsimoniously: first to MGM for Waterloo Bridge (1940), then to Alexander Korda, who had originally discovered Leigh in Britain, for That Hamilton Woman (1941). There followed an absence from screen dictated by war and sickness. She reappeared as Bernard Shaw's Egyptian kitten of a queen in Caesar and Cleopatra (1945), looking ravaged and mature enough to play Shakespeare's Cleopatra.

She was Tennessee Williams' own choice for the part of Blanche DuBois in his play A Streetcar Named Desire. The play was filmed in 1951, and this time Leigh's Southern drawl was so convincing that it seemed to issue from a dark bruised recess of her being. A sense of inevitable decline is captured in the curtain line: 'After all, I've always depended on the kindness of stranger' - a melancholy echo of that other famous exit line 'After all, tomorrow is another day', which summed up the headstrong, vixenish, egotistical Scarlett.

James Smith & Sons Umbrellas

Not very far from The British Museum you find James Smith & Sons Umbrellas established in 1830. Even if it concerns such a mundane thing as an umbrella you want one that is a cut above the rest. This particular umbrella on the pictures has a handle made out of Bark Cherrywood. It also has a silver lapband where you can have your initials engraved. Prices start at £245.

Philip Treacy

I saw a programme today where there was a segment about Philip Treacy which served as a reminder of his genius as a milliner. Philip Treacy was born in 1967 in Ireland and started his education with journalism at National College of Art and Design in Dublin. The late Isabella Blow, who was style editor for Tatler helped to launch his career as a milliner and she frequently wore his hats. He has designed for major designers like Alexander McQueen and Valentino. Philip Treacy has a unique view on style and design. His hats are nothing short of magical and works of art.

Gul & Blå

Gul & Blå which means Yellow & Blue. A jeans brand that saw the light in Stockholm, Sweden in 1966. I think the brand name still exists but is not owned by the founders Lars Knutsson and Martina Clason This is where my mother worked way back when and I almost exclusively ran around in jeans and sweatshirts from Gul & Blå. Maria Knutsson designed the V-jeans with really wide legs that became a huge success. People queued for hours to get the jeans and they could barely manufacture them in the speed that people wanted them.

Siwon is best known for his role in the 2006 Hong Kong historical action film A Battle of Wits as young Prince Liang Shi. Siwon can speak Korean, basic Mandarin, and very little Cantonese (Shown in his Hong Kong interview). He is also one of the first four Korean artists to be on Chinese postage stamps. Siwon was born and raised in an affluent, strict Protestant family in Seoul, South Korea. He was scouted by a talent agent when he was 16, who recommended him to audition for the Starlight Casting System to become an entertainer. Siwon's parents disapproved him pursuing in an entertainment career, so he had to secretly audition. He successfully passed auditions, and after consideration, his parents allowed him to sign under the talent agency SM Entertainment. Siwon said that although his father allowed him to sign the contract, he would not give any help to his son. He later moved into dormitories with fellow trainees and he was trained in areas of singing, acting, and dancing. He made his first appearance in a music video of The Grace's Dana when he was still a solo singer in 2003. A year after, he made a brief appearance in the short drama, Precious Family. In 2005, Siwon made a brief appearance in the KBS drama Eighteen, Twenty-Nine as the young Kang Bong-man.

Not long after Siwon's first television appearance, SM Entertainment released an announcement that he would officially debut as one of the twelve members in a boy band. This band later became officially known as Super Junior 05, the first generation of the rotational music group Super Junior. A few months before the debut of Super Junior 05, Siwon made his first official media appearance with band mate Han Geng as a runway model in a fashion show by Bum Suk.Super Junior 05 officially debuted on November 6, 2005 on SBS's music program Popular Songs, performing their first single, "TWINS (Knock Out)". The cast promoted the movie throughout China with a short tour of four cities in November 2006. While the film received mixed reviews, Siwon garnered positive notices for his performance. He also received praises from co-star Lau, stating that Siwon is a wonderful actor and that he sets a good example for young Hong Kong idols.Half a year after the release of A Battle of Wits, Siwon starred in the high school mystery/comedy film Attack on the Pin-Up Boys with other Super Junior members. He played the lead role as a controlling and severe class president who was one of the popular possible subjects of being attacked by mysterious forces. Despite positive critical ratings, that film did not do well in the box-office, but all four versions of the film's DVD were all sold out and broke chart records. A few months later, Siwon was cast in mini-drama Legend of Hyang Dan as the lead role, Lee Mong-ryong.Siwon is scheduled in April 2011 to film Taiwanese drama Extravagant Challenge (traditional Chinese: 華麗的挑戰) with Ivy Chen and fellow band member Donghae as the three main characters. Reiss

When I moved to London I lived close to Kings Road so that road has a special place in my heart. One of my favourite shops to saunter into was (and still is) Reiss. They don't provide jaw dropping fashion perhaps but they do have classical pieces that you can keep in your wardrobe for a long time to come. The military inspired jacket above is a nice purchase and it is one of the best colours ever, navy blue.

This blue and floral hankerchief I consider a must have.

When we already are into blue why not a navy blue suit. We can't run around in grey and black all the time.

I have a thing for sweaters with patches on the shoulders or the elbows. I wonder what that means??

A informação é da revista “People”.
